The Yael Zamir Quartet brings to life four distinct colours of Brazilian music - bossa nova, samba, forro, and choro - through a jazz lens.

Choro is one of Brazil's oldest styles, born in the 1800s from a mix of European dances and African rhythms. Its lively, syncopated melodies greatly influenced samba, which has become a vibrant symbol of Brazil, known especially for powering the annual Carnival celebrations. Bossa nova softened samba's busy rhythms to create a smooth, intimate sound. Meanwhile, forró developed in Brazil's northeast countryside. It blended African and European influences into a style popularized by Luiz Gonzaga, who spread the music across the country through the radio.

The Yael Zamir Quartet draws inspiration from great Brazilian artists such as Hermeto Pascoal, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and Egberto Gismonti, who offer a fresh take on these traditional styles.

Award-winning jazz flutist Yael Zamir is known for her expressive improvisation and distinctive sound. A key presence in Melbourne's jazz scene, she has performed with renowned artists such as Tony Gould, Lior and Panorama Brasil. Yael's expertise and unique voice has established her as a major force in the Australian jazz and improvisation scene.

Yael will be joined by Steve Grant (piano), Ollie Shute (drums) and Max Raz-Liebman (bass).
