Merriwa Park

Ryley Street Wangaratta Victoria

Merriwa Park is a picturesque riverside reserve and one of Wangaratta's most loved green spaces, featuring sweeping lawns and a majestic stand of River Red Gums.

The name Merriwa is believed to be an Aboriginal term meaning rich flat ground at the bend of a river, reflecting the park's location within a natural floodplain. Many of the River Red Gums seen today were planted during the park's official opening in August 1905, although some pre-date this time and others have naturally regenerated over the years.

Set alongside meandering lagoons that support diverse aquatic and birdlife, the park provides a peaceful setting for relaxation and outdoor recreation. Facilities include barbecues, picnic tables, playground equipment, lawn tennis courts and toilets, making it ideal for families and group gatherings.

Over many years, the Wangaratta Urban Landcare Group has undertaken extensive bush regeneration works, enhancing the natural environment and creating a network of walking paths through the river red gum woodland and understorey vegetation. From Merriwa Park, visitors can easily walk through to neighbouring Kaluna Park for further nature exploration.

Access is available via Ryley Street, and during the spring school holidays, the large pond behind the tennis courts is stocked with rainbow trout, offering a fun and accessible fishing experience for families.
