Lake William Hovell Recreation Area

Upper King River Road Cheshunt Victoria

Located approximately 18 kilometres from Cheshunt, Lake William Hovell is a scenic and popular recreational destination set among the rolling landscapes of the King Valley.

This picturesque lake offers a range of outdoor activities, making it an ideal spot for a relaxing day out. Visitors can enjoy picnicking and barbecuing in well-maintained areas, as well as fishing, canoeing and walking along the shoreline. The lake is home to a variety of fish species, including trout, redfin and the protected Macquarie perch, an endangered native species.

Constructed in 1971, Lake William Hovell was built to store water from the King River for downstream irrigation. The reserve has been open to the public for decades and is managed to balance recreation with its important role as an irrigation storage.

Unique boating regulations help preserve the lake's peaceful atmosphere, with vessel speeds limited to eight kilometres per hour and engine power restricted. Camping is not permitted within the reserve, although much of the western shoreline is easily accessible and well maintained for visitors.

Water levels can vary significantly throughout the year, often dropping in summer and refilling over winter. These seasonal changes make the cooler months, particularly winter, an ideal time for trout fishing.
